Behavioral Science Meets Energy Transition: Unlocking Clean Energy Adoption in the Global South

How can human behavior shape the future of energy? Explore how GEAPP’s 2024 Bellagio convening brought together energy leaders and behavioral scientists to accelerate clean energy adoption in the Global South—paving the way for scalable solutions and people-powered progress.
To meet the Paris Agreement’s goal of cutting emissions by 45% by 2030, more than just technology is needed — people’s choices and behaviors must shift, too. In September 2024, the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) convened energy leaders and behavioral experts at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Centre to explore the power of behavioral science in accelerating clean energy adoption. The gathering marked a pivotal step in aligning human-centered strategies with energy efficiency and renewable energy efforts across the Global South. With pilot programs, new policy models, and stronger cross-sector collaboration on the horizon, this convening laid the groundwork for a people-powered energy transition.
