Fatih Birol has been Executive Director of the International Energy Agency since 2015, leading its first major modernization to engage emerging economies and expand its role as a hub for clean energy transitions and broader energy security. Under his leadership, the IEA now covers electricity, natural gas, renewables, and critical minerals. Named to the TIME100 list, Dr. Birol has received numerous honors, including the French Legion of Honour, Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun, and top state decorations from Austria, Germany, Italy, and Sweden.
