Our Investments

Demonstrating the viability of projects, businesses and technologies through blended finance to drive the just energy transition

GEAPP’s junior equity stake in Nuru helps tens of thousands of children in the DRC read and do homework without using candlelight, and allows poor families to save money on diesel.

Catalytic investments in Vietnam support the government’s transition from coal to renewable energy.

First loss financing in Nigeria aids the development of mini grids, providing affordable electricity to homes and small- and medium-sized enterprises, fostering job creation.

The DREAM project demonstrates that renewable energy costs can be lowered through efficient procurement.

Resource mobilization

GEAPP is focused on closing the energy transition investment gap in developing countries through blended finance investments.

This means that in addition to reducing carbon, extending energy access and improving livelihoods, GEAPP seeks to mobilize capital from the private and public sectors for speed, scale and sustainability in all our investments.

Our philanthropic capital can be invested in both direct and platform structures which enables GEAPP to invest flexibly for maximum impact and capital mobilization.

We are presently undertaking a review of our blended finance portfolio to continue to drive impact and to inform the next wave of blended finance investments.

Our Solutions

GEAPP’s distinctive approach focuses on technologies and business models with a demonstrated potential to drive transformative results. Our catalytic investment is focused on dramatically expanded three areas of work. We will test and pilot a wider range of possible solutions over time.

Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE)

Accelerating the uptake of distributed renewable energy, to provide fast, clean, cheap power where it is needed most

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

Deploying Battery Energy Storage Systems to strengthen grids and enable them to rapidly adopt high levels of least-cost, variable renewable energy

Productive Use of Energy

Working with energy solutions that maximize efficiency and effectiveness, empowering businesses to thrive while contributing to sustainable development goals

Our Scope

We currently focus our efforts on Brazil, DRC, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, South Africa and Vietnam, where we have long-term programs and in-country teams.

Together this represents over 50% of the world’s energy poor. We then test, pilot and roll out replicable and scalable solutions from these countries to locations, which exhibit common traits or opportunities. We reach 80+ countries through our wider Alliance, drawing on our partner capabilities and shared efforts.

GEAPP has the flexibility to deploy capital across grants, concessional debt, guarantees, junior equity, amongst other instruments, to meet concessional needs.
