Global Energy Alliance case study series: Transforming Nigeria's energy system
The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet is helping Nigeria transform its energy system and deliver reliable, clean energy to communities who can use it to realize their economic ambitions.
By pairing interconnected mini grids with energy-efficient agricultural equipment the program helps rural and semi-rural communities access the infrastructure and tools to power businesses, strengthen agricultural value chains and transform livelihoods.
In a country in which one-in-three people lack access to electricity, this work demonstrates how targeted catalytic investment, strong partnerships and coordinated action can unlock large-scale impact — connecting 30,000 people to electricity, supporting 14,000 jobs and mobilizing significant additional financing, all while avoiding 75,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.
Nigeria is transforming its energy future — from low access to unreliable, expensive and dirty fossil fuels, to universal cheap, clean energy. Early catalytic investment from Global Energy Alliance attracted follow-on funding from partners including the World Bank, sharing Nigeria’s vision of a bright, prosperous, clean energy-powered future.
‘Transforming Nigeria’s energy system’ is part of a series of seven Global Energy Alliance case studies highlighting impact across the global portfolio. Together, they showcase a consistent model: pairing infrastructure with opportunity, aligning public and private actors and creating pathways to scale that extend beyond individual projects.
From Africa to Asia and Latin America, the series illustrates how Global Energy Alliance is translating its two pillars — Grids of the Future and Powering Opportunity — into tangible results for communities, demonstrating how clean energy can drive inclusive growth, unlock investment and accelerate progress toward universal clean energy access.
