Vietnam Gears Up for Clean Energy Transformation with BESS

The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT)’s Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority (EREA) along with Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) joined forces to host a technical workshop on June 21st, 2024, in Hanoi. The spotlight was on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and their crucial role in propelling Vietnam’s clean energy transition.

Key Insights from the Workshop

Vietnam’s Power Development Plan VIII (PDPVIII) has set an ambitious target: 300 MW of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) capacity by 2030. The workshop tackled the challenges and opportunities of achieving this goal, focusing on the “how” of large-scale BESS integration in Vietnam. While this technology is new to the country, its benefits for clean energy are undeniable. The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, fostering collaboration for a clean energy future:

• Report Launch: A Step Forward in Grid Stability – A key highlight was the launch of the report, “Enhancing Vietnam’s Grid Stability with BESS,” co-authored by the Institute of Energy (IE) and GEAPP. This report explored the optimal BESS scale for Vietnam’s grid to enhance frequency stability.
• International Expertise for Local Solutions – The event featured presentations from leading international organizations like RMI, ADB, and GEAPP, along with government representatives. Experts shed light on BESS as a game-changer for Vietnam’s energy transition journey.
• Learning from Global Leaders – Case studies from India and Mongolia provided valuable insights into BESS integration and its potential for Vietnam’s grid.
• A Collaborative Approach: The Panel Discussion – A dynamic panel discussion on “BESS as an Enabling Technology for the Energy Transition” concluded the event. Representatives from utilities, regulatory bodies, supply chains, and the financial sector discussed various aspects of BESS implementation.
