Vietnam and Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) build on commitments made at COP27 to accelerate just energy transition
- Memorandums of Understanding signed between GEAPP and the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and the Institute of Energy
- Collaboration will support Vietnam’s ambitious climate and energy goals to reach net-zero emissions by 2050
24 February 2023, Hanoi –The Government of Vietnam and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) have signed Memorandums of Understanding across three ministries to collaborate on shared goals designed to deliver Vietnam’s energy transition efforts and its commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
This announcement builds on the meeting between Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha and GEAPP CEO Simon Harford at the UN Climate Change Conference, COP27 in Egypt, and comes at the conclusion of a meeting between GEAPP; the Government of Vietnam; the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT); the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI); and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE). These meetings reflect a shared commitment to support Vietnam on its path to accelerate an equitable energy transition that will benefit both people and planet.
“The clean energy transition is among the most urgent issues of our time”, said Simon Harford, CEO of the GEAPP. “When it comes to climate change, South East Asia is one of the world’s most vulnerable regions, that is why we are committed to working with Vietnam, and other neighbouring countries, in their efforts to decarbonise and expand clean energy to millions of citizens, stimulating sustainable, green economic growth and prosperity.”
Vietnam and GEAPP seek to foster and hasten collaboration in harnessing the considerable human and financial resources needed to increase s access to reliable and affordable energy, while also combating climate change. The areas for potential partnership and support include: capacity-building and knowledge-sharing activities, technical assistance, and research and impact assessments of issues relevant to the just energy transition and green growth.
This collaboration marks an important step in GEAPP’s mission to catalyse and scale just energy transitions in South East Asia and worldwide. It follows GEAPP’s announcement at COP27 of its support of Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) initiatives in Vietnam, Indonesia, and South Africa.
