Muhammad Wakil

Country Delivery Lead, Nigeria

Muhammad Wakil is the Country Delivery Lead in Nigeria for the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet. Prior to this position, he was a Senior Energy Specialist at the World Bank where he specialized in energy infrastructure investments in Africa and the Middle East. From 2014 to early 2022, he was a member of the Nigeria Energy Team and was key in growing the portfolio from $300 million to $2.1 billion. His work covered a variety of power sector issues including policy and regulatory reform, gas-to-power, generation, transmission, distribution and off-grid electrification.

Prior to the World Bank, he worked for the Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory Facility (UK funded program) as a power sector advisor and financial analyst. In this role, he provided technical assistance to government agencies involved in different aspects of the Nigeria power sector. He also worked in Nigeria’s electricity regulator where he participated in critical commercial regulation reforms in the run up to the continent’s most ambitious privatization of electricity generation and distribution companies.

Muhammad started his career in investment advisory in the UK and has also worked in Nigeria’s central bank. He is a holder of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and has an MSc in Metals & Energy Finance from Imperial College London.
