BESS Consortium
A multi-stakeholder partnership of countries and resourcing partners to expand Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC)
Variable renewable energy sources such as solar and wind don’t generate electricity continuously. To ensure reliable access to clean electricity, this energy must be stored for later use.
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) store surplus energy produced during high-output periods and release it when demand rises during low-production times, such as overcast days. BESS store energy for later use providing consistent energy access, helping to alleviate energy poverty in low- and middle-incomes countries (LMICs).
The BESS Consortium — a multi-stakeholder partnership of LMICs in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean and partners providing funding and technical expertise — is working to expand BESS capacity in LMICs by providing countries with financial, technical, and regulatory support to implement BESS projects.
