Change Energy, Change Lives

At COP29 Energy Day, both the urgency of the just energy transition and the momentum towards it have never been greater.

Renewables are growing exponentially – on course to meet almost half of global electricity demand by the end of this decade – as the most cost-effective power source globally.

The UAE Consensus goals of tripling renewable capacity and doubling energy efficiency by 2030, plus the COP29 pledge to drive a sixfold increase in energy grids and storage, are possible. But only if we ensure no country is left behind. Historically, lower-income countries have been locked out of the benefits of clean energy, due to a lack of financial and technical support. Now we have an opportunity, and a pledge, to ensure all countries can take part in the renewable energy revolution.

To deliver against these global climate and energy goals, we must join together and accelerate along the highway to private finance, particularly in support of emerging economies by ensuring access to the affordable capital and renewable energy technologies that can change energy and lives.

GEAPP, at its core, is an Alliance.

The urgent need for countries to achieve universal access to modern energy while the world reduces its carbon emissions will not be accomplished by a singular organization, but through the buy-in of governments, industry leaders, and communities. To encourage collaboration on and alignment of our carbon, access, and jobs goals, GEAPP regularly convenes its Alliance Partners to seize opportunities, mitigate challenges, and prioritize mission-critical actions.

GEAPP launched the Demand Aggregation for Renewable Technology (DART) initiative in 2022 to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy in Nigeria by aggregating demand and allowing companies to benefit from economies of scale. The pilot continues to gain ground, cutting costs by 30% for developers and spurring standardization in the sector.
DART 3.0 Kicks Off, Offering DRE Companies Access to Financing and Affordable Equipment
GEAPP provided catalytic funding for renewable energy companies to install and operate rooftop solar and mini-grids in Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. GEAPP has established two initiatives in the states of Maharashtra and Odisha to solarize agriculture.
Clean Energy Solutions Change Farming in India
In the Caribbean, GEAPP supports the Haitian Ministry of Public Works, Transports and Communications (MTPTC), the National Regulatory Authority of the Energy Sector (ANARSE), and local developer Alina Eneji in scaling up a mesh grid site from 1,000 connections to 4,000.
Mesh grids in Haiti
GEAPP launched the Distributed Renewable Energy – Agriculture Modalities (DREAM) program in 2022, which had delivered nine mini-grid pilots by early 2024, to demonstrate the feasibility of international private sector investment and provide a pathway for government and development finance institutions to follow.
DREAMing Big in Ethiopia
GEAPP began working with Vietnam in 2022 to support the country’s equitable energy transition, providing technical assistance and catalytic financing so it can leapfrog fossil fuel dependence and develop its renewable energy sources. GEAPP currently has a 20-50MW pilot with partners.
Renewable Energy Scale Up in Northern Vietnam
GEAPP has been partnering with developers across the DRC since late-2022. In 2023, GEAPP closed a flagship transaction for hybrid metro-grid developer, Nuru which announced $40M in Series B funding.
Changing mindsets: the DRC’s clean energy opportunity
GEAPP launched the BESS Consortium at COP28 - where Barbados, Belize, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Ghana, Honduras, India, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritania, Mozambique, Nigeria, Uruguay, and Togo committed. These first-mover countries are part of a collaborative effort to secure 5GW of BESS commitments by the end of 2024. To date, 15 countries and 18 resource partners have joined the consortium.
